What does the day look like?
A maritime Fleet Manager works from a shore-based corporate office overseeing the technical, commercial, safety, and crewing operations of 15 to 40 ocean-going merchant vessels. Daily tasks involve monitoring vessel tracking, speed, and bunker consumption via Fleet Management Systems (FMS) and Voyage Management Systems (VMS), reviewing maintenance platforms like DNV Veracity, ABS Wavesight, or Veson Nautical, and approving operating expenditure (OPEX) budgets and dry-docking repair contracts. The role also coordinates special surveys with classification societies like DNV or Lloyd's Register and leads incident response during collisions, groundings, or Port State Control detentions.
Only 5% of the time involves standing on a ship's bridge. About 45% of the day is spent on regulatory compliance, audit reviews, and safety management, 30% on financial budgeting, dry-dock negotiations, and fuel procurement, and 20% on team leadership and crewing. Standard office hours are 40 to 45 hours per week, Monday through Friday, but managers remain on a 24/7 emergency response roster across global time zones for sudden machinery failures or emergencies. Around 15% to 25% of the year is spent traveling to dry docks in China, Singapore, Dubai, or Türkiye and visiting ships in port.
