What does the day look like?
You spend most of the day on research and administration. You research artists and propose solo and group exhibitions, build and maintain checklists with data entry, write catalogues and wall labels, handle loan correspondence, write committee papers for acquisitions, research origin and history, inspect galleries, and work with conservation, registration, publications, design, framing, lighting and installation teams. You also manage budgets, raise money with sponsors, write grants, journal articles and publicity material, lead tours and talks, and supervise assistants, interns and volunteers.
Choosing beautiful photographs is a small part of the day. Most of it is research, correspondence, committee papers, budgets and fundraising. Tools: The Museum System (TMS), FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Access, Artsystems Collections, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office including Excel and PowerPoint. The Photographers' Gallery Curator post is 40 hours per week, mainly office-based, with evening openings, out-of-hours tours and travel to fairs, biennials and touring venues. Overtime around deadlines and opening weeks is normal.
