What does the day look like?
In a field team you do geological mapping with structural measurements, log diamond drill core and RC chips to company procedure, mark core for sampling, and take soil, rock and trench samples. You supervise drill rigs and core cutting, capture and validate data in the exploration database, write daily and weekly reports, and build GIS compilations.
Named tools and systems: QGIS and ESRI ArcGIS, Geosoft Oasis montaj, Maptek Vulcan, Gemcom Surpac and Datamine, in some shops Micromine and Leapfrog, ioGAS, acQuire or similar, plus compass-clinometer, hand lens, core saw, magnetic susceptibility meter, XRF analyser and ground-penetrating radar on site. Finding ore in remote terrain is a minority share of time. Most time is logging, sampling discipline, QAQC checks, database entry and report writing. Camp rotations, shift rosters, weekend cover during drilling, heat and dust exposure and long vehicle transits belong to the role. Night work is tied to active drill programmes rather than permanent nights.
