What does the day look like?
In a factory, you may move, load and unload raw materials and finished goods; sort parts; pack and label products; inspect them visually; stack containers; clean machinery and work areas; and assist operators. Tools include hand trucks, trolleys, weighing, packing and sealing equipment, conveyors, cleaning tools, personal protective equipment and the employer's machinery. Construction tasks can include mixing and spreading concrete, plaster or mortar, digging and filling holes, moving sand, gravel and materials, cleaning demolition sites and assisting skilled workers.
The ordinary legal limit is 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, with agreed overtime generally allowed up to 12 hours a week. The minimum break is 30 minutes after 4 hours and 1 hour after 8 hours. Shift, night and overtime work depend on the written contract and workplace. No primary study gives a reliable split between core production and the less visible handling, cleaning, waiting or inspection work.
