What does the day look like?
Most of your working time is spent in a laboratory or office doing computer modelling, rather than sailing on the open ocean. According to O*NET survey data, 59% of geoscientists spend more than half their time sitting, and 52% work more than 40 hours per week. Land-based hours are standard, with extra hours near deadlines and weekend or shift work being rare. Day-to-day tools include The MathWorks MATLAB, Python, Git, ESRI ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, RockWare, Geosoft, and CAD software.
Sea time varies from days to months per cruise. During expeditions on research vessels like RRS Discovery or RRS James Cook, hours are long, irregular, and physically demanding in cramped living conditions. Tasks at sea include collecting water, sediment, and biological samples, deploying and recovering moorings, CTD rosettes, gliders, autonomous underwater vehicles, and remotely operated vehicles, as well as using turbulence profilers, chemical sensors, and eDNA samplers. When back on shore, you analyse satellite and in-situ data, run mathematical models, write research papers, and prepare funding proposals.
