What does the day look like?
A typical day divides into 25% writing gameplay mechanics, camera math, weapon behaviours, and animation state machines in C++ or engine blueprints. The largest share — 35% — goes to profiling, memory allocation debugging, frame-rate budget optimisation, and multithreading synchronisation. Another 25% is spent on code reviews, architectural discussions, mentoring junior programmers, and fixing broken trunk build pipelines, while the remaining 15% involves cross-functional syncs with level designers, technical animators, and producers to scope feasibility.
Work centers on Unreal Engine 5, Unity, or proprietary studio engines such as REDengine, Frostbite, Snowdrop, and Decima. Senior engineers rely on RenderDoc, PIX for Windows, NVIDIA Nsight, Tracy Profiler, Unreal Insights, and Visual Studio Profiler, alongside Perforce Helix Core (P4), Git LFS, TeamCity, and Jenkins. Standard hours are 40 hours per week (8 hours per day). Crunch periods reach 50 to 60 hours per week during milestone stabilization, pre-certification (Sony TRC, Microsoft XR), and release submission windows. On-call shifts occur during patch deployment nights for live-service multiplayer titles.
