What does the day look like?
Your day is client ownership plus team ownership, with writing underneath. You draft and amend patent claims, answer examiners' office actions, handle opposition and appeal work, write freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, supervise associates and patent engineers on live files, run client pitches and fee talks, review bills and realisation, and sit in partnership and practice-group meetings.
The named tools are MyEPO Portfolio, Espacenet, WIPO PATENTSCOPE, the United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Center, LexisNexis and Westlaw, plus docketing and billing suites such as Anaqua. The part you imagine — inventing and arguing breakthrough technology — is a small share of the hours. Most of it is precise technical writing, deadline docket control, and business development. The work is office-based and full-time, with peaks around filing and opposition dates. There is no shift pattern or night rota, but late work before filing deadlines and travel to hearings are normal.
