What does the day look like?
A typical working day runs from 07:30 to 17:30 on weekdays, alongside rotating duty for school events, parents' evenings, inspections, and teacher cover coordination. Only 10% to 20% of your time is spent on direct teaching or classroom observation (usually a maximum of 4 to 8 periods per week, or none at all in large schools).
Between 40% and 50% of the day goes into crisis resolution, behaviour management, student pastoral care, safeguarding escalation, and handling parent conflicts. The remaining 30% to 40% is spent building timetables, managing data in SIMS, Arbor, PowerSchool, Untis / WebUntis, or e-Maktab / Kundalik, tracking child protection in CPOMS or MyConcern, evaluating staff, and administering exams. The role is high-stress and requires being on-call for critical incidents.
